There’s been over 35 years of indecision concerning an extension at Heathrow Airport, and it’s cost them billions of pounds. After finally getting the go ahead, their new runway should be ready for 2026.

According to the Guardian, a Singapore corporation who own 11.2% of Heathrow Airport have been waiting on an extension decision for 25 years. But the first extension proposal came in 1971 where there were plans to extend the capacity. Over 35 years later and Heathrow still await action.

The Busiest UK Airport

Heathrow is renowned as the busiest airport in Britain, and officials have already stated how they’re operating at 98%. As an increase of passengers is expected, it’s apparent that they just can’t cater for additional travellers. This could have an affect on their place as the busiest airport. Global passengers are expected to double by 2030, but Heathrow won’t have their third runway active until 2026. This means that by 2020, Heathrow Airport won’t be the busiest airport in the UK, as many customers will have to go elsewhere.

Too Little, Too Late

Many wonder if this procrastination and hesitation will be the decline of Heathrow. With a forecast already predicting them to drop from the number one busiest airport, they could struggle to regain traction. The expansion is predicted to make £61bn over 60 years, averaging just over a billion each year. Judging by how long it’s taken to come up with a finalised decision, it means they have already lost out on over £25-35bn. The Airport had over 75 million passengers in 2015 and a 73% increase is expected once the third runway is complete. In contrast, Singapore’s Changi Airport has already extended their airports in recognition of Bangkok Airport and Kuala Lumpur Airport.
